This workshop helps you better prepare to be outdoors and not become the subject of a search and rescue. Topics include: basics of clothing and equipment selection (10 essentials), best practices of pack loading, how the search and rescue system works and how to help professionals help you, route planning, basic map and compass use, emergency shelters, safe water procurement, basic/common wilderness medical emergencies and more advanced land navigation. Participants are encouraged to bring whatever hiking/backpacking equipment they have. The instructor(s) will be happy to offer suggestions for equipment. Focus will be primarily on day hiking, but some overnight backpacking topics will be covered.
Optional hike with instructor(s) both days, following the class, to allow further skills development.
