Join us at Jones Lake State Park as we share our deep interest in the turpentine industry and raise public awareness of the past and its influence on the present. We will explore the naval store industry from the longleaf pine forest to the sailing vessels that consumed our once majestic longleaf pine ecosystem. We will also be taking a hayride to see old and true remanences of the industry that put North Carolina on the map. There will also be demonstrations in which we will be making real tar, pitch and turpentine. Guaranteed to be a day full of adventure and education. You will also receive a copy of the amazing book, “Tar Heels; North Carolina’s Forgotten Economy: Pitch, Tar, Turpentine and Longleaf Pines.” Things to bring: Sunglasses, hats, bug spray, appropriate clothes per weather.
