Performance Measure 4.1 Guidance for Completing an Inspection Form

PM 4.1 Landowner shall meet or exceed practices prescribed by State Forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are applicable to the property.

(Compliance with all state forestry BMPs that apply to the property is required for certification. Any noncompliances must be corrected before the property can be certified. If you cannot answer Yes to this question, do not certify the property.)

4.1.2 Landowner shall minimize road construction and other disturbances within riparian zones and wetlands. Activities in riparian zones and wetlands shall comply with applicable BMPs.

(The Standards of Sustainability state that activities in riparian zones and wetlands shall comply with applicable BMPs. If you note noncompliant disturbances in these areas, do not certify the property until the issue is corrected.)

Here are examples of comments that might be included in the Notes/Observations section:

    • Refer to the forest management plan for specific air, soil and water quality protection practices.
    • 89 acres of the property are designated a no-cut riparian buffer zone to protect and maintain water quality.
    • All timber harvest contracts include language requiring forestry BMP compliance.
    • The landowner agrees to Performance Measures and indicators as they relate to air, soil and water.
    • Wetland areas adjacent to major drainages and creeks are protected by designated riparian buffer zones. No harvesting will occur within the boundaries of these riparian zones.  
    • The landowner commits to minimize any road construction or other disturbance within their riparian forest buffer zones and wetlands.
    • The landowner commits to meet or exceed practices by state forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are applicable to the property.
    • The forest management plan includes a detailed soils map and detailed soil description including risk of erosion or rutting.
    • A preharvest plan was developed for the property using the N.C. Forest Service’s Preharvest Planning tool.
